Comments on draft of Wilkins's thesis
There needs to be a summary of what you have actually discovered
in the first few pages. The example problem, while impressive,
does not meet this need, because it doesn't explain at all how the
result was obtained.
How does your use of patterns and productions differ from previous
use? Some statement of this should be in the first few pages.
Would MYCIN-type productions work without generalization for chess?
How does search affect pattern matching?
Is "quiesce" English? It isn't in Webster's Collegiate. p 20
p 49 Your explanation of type 3 patterns is not clear. Also your
statement that type 3 patterns are too difficult for chess experts
to write seems doubtful. I also doubt the statement that they aren't
needed. I think I could think up several endgame type 3 patterns.
p50 Making the concept of a safe square into a subroutine rather
than a patterns seems like giving up too easily.
